2021 Season Employment

Honken Dahlias is a .25 acre urban dahlia farm growing in the North End of St. Paul, MN. We grow over 150 varieties of dahlias and are recognized as a premium source of cut flowers in the Twin Cities. We sell weekly at the Mill City Farmer's Market in Minneapolis from late August to early October. We also sell to wholesale customers through the Twin City Flower Exchange. Honken Dahlias also supplies dahlia tubers to flower farmers and home gardeners through an online sale each winter. We utilize organic sustainable growing methods without the use of chemicals at any stage of growing or harvest. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in learning about growing dahlias and being a part of a small urban farm business.

Job Details

We are hiring two crew members to be involved in all stages of growing dahlias. Responsibilities include (but not limited to)

  • Pre-starting dahlias, making plant tags
  • Preparing shipping for tuber orders
  • Soil/bed preparation using "no till" method with broad-fork
  • Planting
  • Weed management (hoeing, hand weeding, mulching etc)
  • Fertilizing (Organic granular and foliar spray)
  • Supporting (installing fence posts, support twine etc)
  • Grooming / pruning plants throughout the growing season
  • Pest management
  • Bucket washing / market prep
  • Cut flower harvest / bouquet making Customer service
  • Harvest / bunch for wholesale market (TCFE) during peak season on Tuesday and Friday mornings
  • Tuber harvesting / dividing / storing / inventory

Time Commitment

Position #1: Full Season Crew Member (April - November)

This position would involve independently managing some of the ongoing tasks during the entire growing season. It would include working some (occasionally all) of the hours independently on an urban farm plot. Opportunity to take a lead role in coordinating and managing some projects.

April - mid August: average 8-12 hours per week. Some hours required on Saturdays, with flexibility to complete other hours/tasks throughout the week.

Late August - early October: opportunity for up to 16-20 hours per week. Saturdays + an additional 1-2 weekdays for plant maintenance and additional harvests.

*Begin as early as 4:00 am on Saturdays for Mill City Farmer's Market harvests (August 28 - October 2)

Position #2: Peak Season Crew Member and Market Assistant

Opportunity for assistance with early growing season projects such as planting and tuber harvesting. Also may involve some relief support if/when other staff are not available. Primary responsibility will involve assistance during peak dahlia season (mid August - September) in harvest, bunching and bouquet assembly for Saturday Farmer's Market. Harvests begin as early as 4 a.m. During peak season, this position will include approximately 8-12 hours per week with most hours performed on Saturdays.

Valuable Experience / Skills

  • Farm experience preferred (required for full season position)
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to adhere to high quality standards
  • Interest and/or skills in basic market bouquet design
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physically demanding, often repetitive work (bending, kneeling, digging, lifting)
  • Ability to work independently or with a team
  • Ability to work in variable weather conditions (heat, rain, cool temps)
  • Willingness to work as early as 4 am in an urban setting harvesting dahlias with headlamp
  • Driver's license and access to reliable transportation


$14-16 per hr (depending on experience) with opportunity for raise mid season. Additional mileage reimbursement if transporting flowers in your own vehicle.
