Honken Dahlias Crew Member 


Honken Dahlias is an urban dahlia farm currently growing in the North End of St. Paul, MN. We grow over 150 varieties of dahlias and are recognized as a source of premium cut dahlias in the Twin Cities. We sell weekly at the Mill City Farmer's Market in Minneapolis from late August to early October. Honken Dahlias also supplies dahlia tubers to flower farmers and home gardeners. We utilize organic sustainable growing methods without the use of chemicals at any stage of growing or harvest. 


Job Details 

We are hiring two crew members to be involved in the 2020 growing season. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in learning about growing dahlias and being a part of a small urban farm business. Duties include (but not limited to) 

• soil / bed preparation 

• planting 

• weeding 

• mulching 

• fertilizing 

• supporting 

• grooming (pinching, disbudding, deadheading, restricting) 

• pest management 

• Harvesting / bouquet making / display set-up at farmer’s market 

• Farmer’s market set up & sales / customer service 

• tuber harvesting / dividing / storing 


Time Commitment 


Position #1 (Full Season Crew Member)

Mid April – mid August: average 6-8 hrs per week (typically on Saturdays; but flexible as season progresses) 

Late August – early October: average 12-16 hrs per week. Saturdays + an additional 1-2 weekdays for plant maintenance and additional harvests

*Begin as early as 4:00 am on Saturdays for Mill City Farmer’s Market harvests (August 22-October 3)

*Hours do fluctuate throughout season with some projects such as planting (early May) tuber digging (early October) and peak flower harvests (August & September) taking more hours while other weeks in June and July being a bit less. 


Position #2 (Market Assistant)

Saturdays from August 22-October 3

5-8 hrs per week providing assistance for Mill City Farmers Market harvest, set up and sales. Additional hours may be  available throughout season for special projects such as planting, fill in maintenance, tuber harvesting and dividing.


Valuable Experience/Skills 

• Some growing / farming experience preferred 

• Strong attention to detail and willingness to adhere to high quality standards 

• Interest and/or skills in basic market bouquet design 

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physically demanding, often repetitive work (bending, kneeling, digging, lifting) 

• Ability to work independently or with team 

• Ability to work in variable weather conditions (heat, rain, cool temps) 

• Willingness to work as early as 4 am in an urban setting harvesting dahlias with headlamp 

• Driver’s license and access to reliable transportation



$13-16 per hr (Depending on Experience) with opportunity for raise mid season. Additional mileage reimbursement if transporting flowers in your own vehicle
